Spine anatomy, artwork. The spinal cord is made up of grey matter (dark red), which contains nerve cell bodies and white matter (green), which contains myelinated axons. It is covered by three membranes, the meninges. The innermost membrane is the pia mater, which is surrounded by the arachnoid mater and then the dura mater. The spinal cord is enclosed within the vertebral column (bones at right).
