The Colosseum, Rome, Italy. The Colosseum was an amphitheatre where gladiatorial fights and animal slaughter were staged for entertainment. The construction of the Colosseum or Coliseum, initiated by Emperor Vespasian was completed by his sons, Titus and Domitian, between AD 72 and AD 81. It was once capable of seating 50,000 spectators and is now one of the most recognised sites in Rome, Italy.
