Caption

Vitiligo (pale areas) affecting an elderly man's back. Also known as leucoderma, the condition involves a loss of skin pigmentation. The condition, which usually develops in early adulthood, is obviously more apparent in dark-skinned peoples. The lack of melanocytes which causes the condition is believed to result from an underlying autoimmune disorder. Treatment is generally unsatisfactory and is based upon cosmetic make-up. This patient also has several seborrheic warts (dark brown) on his upper back. These are harmless skin growths caused by over-production of keratin.
