Insects of the order diptera, 19th century artwork. This order, the true flies, includes flies, midges, gnats and mosquitoes. At upper centre is a common crane fly (Tipula oleracea). Plate 9 from 'The entomologist's useful compendium' (1819) by George Samouelle (1790-1846).
