Fluorescence microscopy of waves of calcium ions passing between astrocyte glial cells. Astrocytes are the most abundant of the glial cells, cells that support and provide nutrients for nerve cells in the central nervous system. The communication between them is revealed by the calcium wave, itself revealed by the fluorescent probe fluo-3.
