It is a neurotransmitter (small red spheres), transmitting signals between nerves at a nerve cell junction (synapse). Dopamine plays an important role in brain chemistry, and its underproduction causes Parkinson's disease, while excess may cause paranoia and other mental illnesses. The brain's limbic system (pink) is an area rich in dopamine.
