In vitro fertilisation. Conceptual artwork of a developing embryo (centre) above a test tube, with a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) double helix in the background, all representing in vitro fertilisation (IVF). This laboratory process brings the human reproductive cells of a man (sperm or spermatozoon) and a woman (ovum or egg) together outside the body to engineer the process of fertilization. The fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus of a woman where it develops into a baby. IVF is used to treat infertility in men, as well as allowing stored and frozen sperm and eggs to be used from men and women following surgery that affects fertility.
