Fallopian tube inflammation. Artwork of the uterus and fallopian tubes, partially sectioned, in a case of inflammation of the fallopian tubes (salpingitis). At left is the early stages of acute salpingitis, with a more advanced case shown at right. At right, adhesions and scar tissue (white) are also seen, binding the ovary, uterus and fallopian tube together. The ovary (white) of this Fallopian tube is also seen. The acute form is usually caused by a bacterial infection that may have spread from the vagina or uterus. Severe cases may result in infertility as the Fallopian tubes can be blocked by scar tissue. Salpingitis is treated with antibiotic drugs.
