Ulcerative colitis treatment. Artwork showing the large intestine (colon) being treated with a drug (blue spheres) for ulcerative colitis. The colon is inflamed and ulcerated, leading to bleeding, which can cause anaemia, and excessive production of mucus (yellow). In severe cases diarrhoea, pain and fever may result. The cause of the condition is unknown, although bacteria may be involved. Treatment is usually with corticosteroid drugs to reduce the inflammation and sulphasalazine to control the symptoms in the long-term. In certain cases, colectomy, the surgical removal of part or all of the colon, may be required.
