Post mortem instruments, including bowel scissors, chisels and a mallet. The post mortem was introduced in the early 1800s, as a means of determining the cause of death. Post mortem examinations also informed physicians about the internal anatomy of the human body and the internal effects of disease. These instruments are English and date from around 1860.
