These catheters are made of silver and would be inserted into a patient's urethra (the tube by which urine to passes from the bladder to the urinary meatus and out of the body). Catheters have a range of applications in medicine, the thin tubes can be inserted in the body to administer medicines, or to facilitate surgical procedures. Catheters were first introduced to medicine in the 18th century and are still used in modern-day medical practice.
