Amputation knife with metal handle. This instrument dates from around 1890, England. The knife would be used in limb amputation procedures where diseased or injured limbs were surgically removed. The very sharp blade would be used to make an initial incision into the soft tissues and muscles of the limb to expose the bone. This preparation allowed for a rapid cutting of the bone with a limb saw. By the late nineteenth century, surgical procedures had undergone great developments through the introduction of aseptic techniques and anaesthesia.
