Female urinary catheter dating from the nineteenth century. This would be inserted into a patient's urethra (the tube by which urine passes from the bladder to the urinary meatus and out of the body). It has channels for irrigation. Catheters have a range of applications in medicine, the thin tubes can be inserted to administer medicines, or to facilitate surgical procedures. Catheters were first introduced to medicine in the 18th century and are still used in modern-day medical practice.
