This observatory is located on the slopes of Cerro Armazones (Armazones mountain) in the Sierra Vicuna Mackenna of the Chilean Coast Range. In April 2010 the European Southern Observatory Council selected Cerro Armazones as the site for the planned European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), which will be located at the summit of the mountain at an altitude of 3,060 metres. Construction on the E-ELT started in 2014 and is scheduled for completion in around 2022.
