Jaccoud's syndrome. Coloured X-ray of the hand of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), showing deformation of the fingers known as Jaccoud's syndrome. SLE is an autoimmune disorder, meaning that the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It can affect any part of the body, but most often affects the heart, joints and skin. Here, the small joints of the hands have been affected, but there is no bone destruction. There is no cure for the disease, but it can be managed with immunosuppressant and anti-inflammatory drugs.
