Mild sunburn on the neck of an 18-year-old man with red hair and freckles. The skin of the neck has reddened. Exposure to the sun over time has caused freckles to darken, while skin which has been covered has remained very pale. Sunburn is most common in fair-skinned people, whose skin lacks the protective pigment melanin. Repeated exposure can age the skin prematurely and increases the risk of skin cancer.
