Small intestine lining. Light micrograph of a section through the healthy mucosal lining of the small intestine, showing Paneth cells. Paneth cells contain large granules consisting of several anti-microbial compounds and other compounds known to be important in immunity and host-defence. When exposed to bacteria or antigens, Paneth cells secrete these compounds into the intestines.
