Gangrenous gallbladder. Close-up of an inflamed gallbladder that has become gangrenous. Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis) is most commonly caused by obstruction of the cystic duct by gallstones. Gangrene is a serious condition in which a mass of body tissue dies (necrosis), most often due to injury or infection, or certain chronic health conditions.
