Detail of a fascine mat consisting of a large sheet of heavy polyethylene, reinforced by crosswise attached strands of willow branches that are bound together. These mats are sunk from crane ships to the bottom of waterways by loading rocks on top, often basalt. The mats serve to protect the bottom from erosion by currents or other motions of the waterway concerned, like those caused by boat propellors.
