Caption

A fascine mat is here prepared to be subsequently sunk to the bottom of the adjoining waterway. Fascine mats are large sheets of heavy polyethylene, reinforced by crosswise attached strands of willow branches that are bound together. These mats are sunk from crane ships to the bottom of waterways by loading rocks on top, often basalt. The mats serve to protect the bottom from erosion by currents or other motions of the waterway concerned, like those caused by boat propellers.
