This testing dates from the period of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the role of which was transferred on the creation of NASA in 1958. The P-47 Thunderbolt, manufactured by Republic Aviation, was a fighter aircraft introduced in 1942 and used in World War II.
