Caption

Red spinel on calcite. Spinel is a mineral, magnesium aluminium oxide (MgAl2O4). In its pure form it is colourless, but small amounts of chemical impurities create myriad hues. The red variety of gem quality has a specific name: ruby spinel. Calcite is a stable form of calcium carbonate, and is the main constituent of limestone, chalk and marble.
