Barite. Colourless crystals of barite (barium sulphate; BaSO4) with lustrous grey crystals of galena (lead sulphide; PbS). Barite is the principal commercial ore of barium and is also used in the oil, paper and rubber industries. It is used in radiography for barium meals and enemas and is mixed with cement for use as radiation shielding. Galena is a common mineral in various types of rocks, it is the most important lead ore and often contains deposits of silver.
