Firefly reaction. Hot chromium (III) oxide in a ladle is introduced into a flask of concentrated ammonia solution. It catalyses the oxidation of ammonia vapours to nitrogen, nitrous oxide, and water in an exothermic (heat-producing) reaction via two different pathways. The reaction produces sparks.
