Drug-resistant Enterococcus bacteria. Enterococcus (VRE) bacteria. Enterococci cause a range of illnesses, mostly among patients receiving healthcare, but include bloodstream infections, surgical site infections, and urinary tract infections. Some strains are resistant to vancomycin, an antibiotic of last resort, leaving few or no treatment options.
