Respiratory epithelium. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the respiratory epithelium (lining) of the lung, showing club cells (round) surrounded by the cilia (hair-like) of ciliated cells. Club cells secrete mucous, which together with the cilia, act to trap potential pathogens and foreign particles, preventing infection.
