Caption

Human appendix, illustration. The skeleton is visible, and organs shown include the lungs and trachea, liver, gallbladder, stomach, and the large and small intestines. The appendix, shown in red, is a small, redundant branch of the large intestine. It can become blocked and infected, and may become inflamed and painful (appendicitis). An appendicitis may rupture if not treated, and is usually surgically removed.
