The benzene molecule contains six carbon atoms (coloured blue) arranged in the form of a ring, each with an attached hydrogen atom (grey). Benzene is a carcinogenic, aromatic hydrocarbon. Due to its ring structure it is the simplest stable compound having an aromatic character. Benzene is a colourless liquid at room temperature. It is a good solvent for fats, and is obtained from petroleum by catalytic reforming.
