Sprained ligament in a knee joint. This is a frontal view of the left knee with the patella removed. The femur is on the right and the tibia on the left, with the fibula lower left. Ligaments are bands of tissue which join bones together and prevent joints bending beyond a certain range. A twisting force or impact has partially torn the medial collateral ligament (top). This is known as a sprain, and is a common injury which may cause pain and swelling. Treatment is usually with rest and physiotherapy depending on the severity of the tear.
