Skin anatomy. The skin layers include an outer layer of dead skin cells (stratum corneum), below which is the epidermis (pink). Beneath the epidermis is the dermis (thickest layer), with the hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue, yellow fat) at bottom. The dermis contains sebaceous glands and hair follicles at the base of each hair, sweat glands (yellow, coiled), blood vessels (red and blue), and sensory nerves.
