Target cell. Illustration of an abnormal red blood cell, known as a target cell, codocyte, or Mexican hat cell. Red blood cells with this appearance can occur in association with liver disease, iron deficiency, sickle cell disease, thalassaemias and other hereditary disorders of haemoglobin production.
