Atopic eczema. Close-up of atopic eczema on the back of the knee of a 1-year-old boy. Atopic eczema is a form of dermatitis, an inflammation of the skin accompanied by itching. It may be treated using soothing ointments and corticosteroids. In children under 1-year-old it may affect most of the body. Over this age, the backs of the elbows and knees are the most common areas to be affected.
