Stretch marks. Close-up of stretch marks (striae) on the abdomen of a 40-year-old female patient after giving birth. Stretch marks are a form of scarring of the skin that often occur as a result of rapid stretching of the skin. They are caused by tearing of the dermis (the lower layer of skin) and are associated with rapid weight changes or rapid growth. Over time the may diminish but the marks do not disappear completely.
