Lenormand's parachute design, 1783. French physicist Louis-Sebastien Lenormand (1757-1837) jumping from the tower of the Montpellier observatory with the aid of his parachute design on 26 December 1783. Those watching included balloon designer Joseph Montgolfier. Lenormand's parachute was 4.3 metres across with a rigid wooden frame.
