Lenormand's parachute design, 1783. French physicist Louis-Sebastien Lenormand (1757-1837) jumping from the tower of the Montpellier observatory with the aid of his parachute design on 26 December 1783. Those watching included balloon designer Joseph Montgolfier. Lenormand's parachute was 4.3 metres across with a rigid wooden frame. Artwork from 'Aerostation - Aviation' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
