Montgolfier hydraulic ram. French inventor Joseph Montgolfier in 1796. This has been the basis of the design of hydraulic rams ever since. A hydraulic ram, is a cyclic water pump that takes in water at one end that emerges at the other end of the device at a higher pressure but a lower flow rate. Artwork from 'Moteurs' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
