Plasmodesmata plant cell junctions, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Plasmodesmata are membrane channels that connect plant cells. Each plasmodesma has a tube (desmotubule) containing protoplasm (cytosol) inside the plasma membranes, which enables substances to pass from one cell to another across intercellular bridges. These cells are from a Coleus plant.
