Tobacco Mosaic Virus virion. Illustration of the molecular structure of a Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) virion. The TMV plant virus has an single-stranded RNA (ribonucleic acid, red) genome. Although first identified in tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum), it also infects many other species. Symptoms are mosaic patterns on leaves which leads to severe crop loss. The virus is transmitted by seeds and contact between plants.
