Human brain. Section through a gross specimen of a human brain. The front of the brain is at the top. The highly folded darker blue areas are the grey matter of the cerebrum, which is responsible for conscious thought, emotion and voluntary movement. The central dark spaces are ventricles (cavities), which are filled with cerebrospinal fluid which cushions the brain. The pale blue areas are white matter, mostly made up of nerve fibres communicating between different parts of the brain. The corpus callosum can be seen here, and consists of white matter pathways bridging the left and right hemispheres.
