The pale central area is the nucleus, surrounded by the yellow cell body which possesses one extended fibre (axon) and numerous shorter branches (dendrites), which form junctions with processes from other cells. Motor neurones are located in the grey matter of the spinal cord and transmit impulses controlling muscles.
