Light micrograph of nerve cell (neurone) from the human spinal cord. All neurones have a similar basic structure, consisting of a central cell body containing a nucleus and surrounded by cytoplasm (stained brown). Extending from the cell body are two types of processes (brown strands): a single axon and numerous dendrites. Dendrites are highly branched input processes that end in sensory receptors, or form junctions with other neurones. The axon, or nerve fibre, is the neurone's output process, terminating on other neurones or on effector organs.
