Crab. Preserved specimen of a crab exoskeleton. Crabs have an exoskeleton made of the protein, chitin and calcium. This external shell is protective and jointed, and provides attachment for the muscles. Although the crab grows, its exoskeleton does not, so it moults its old shell in order to accommodate its expanding body.
