Elodea canadensis (Canadian Waterweed) leaf cells with chloroplasts in red auto fluorescence under blue excitation light. The chlorophyll is located in thylakoids, membrane-bound compartments inside chloroplasts. Chloroplast thylakoids frequently form stacks of disks referred to as grana, here visible as granular structure with red dots. Microscopic contrast technique : Incident flourescence with blue excitation. Magnification: 980x when printed 10 centimetres wide.
