Greenleaf Manzanita (Arctostaphylos patula), Lassen National Park, California, USA. This manzanita is native to western North America where it grows in coniferous forests at moderate to high elevations. The flowers from this shrub each produce five hard-coated seeds. The seeds require fire followed by cold conditions to germinate. Seeds can remain dormant in the soil for hundreds of years.
