Coronary stent. Coloured angiogram of a section through a heart showing a stent (white mesh) implanted in a coronary artery to treat stenosis (narrowing). This procedure is known as coronary angioplasty. Stents are wire mesh tubes that are used to provide support of passageways within the body. Here they are being used to widen the section of artery that has become narrowed due to atherosclerosis, the build up of fatty plaques (atheroma).
