Yersinia pestis bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of Yersinia pestis bacteria (yellow) on the spines of an oriental rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis). This Gram-negative bacteria is the causative agent of bubonic plaque (the Black Death). It also causes pneumonic and septicaemic plagues. The oriental rat flea is a parasite of rodents and the primary vector of bubonic plague. Magnification unknown.
