Binary star system nova. Illustration of a binary star system producing a stellar eruptions called novae. These relatively common solar outbursts almost always produce gamma rays (magenta). A nova in a system like this one likely produces gamma rays through collisions among multiple shock waves in the rapidly expanding shell of debris.
