Binary star system nova. Illustration of the white dwarf star (centre) in V407 Cygni producing a nova. These relatively common solar outbursts almost always produce gamma rays. Scientists think this outburst primarily emitted gamma rays (magenta) as the blast wave plowed through the gas-rich environment near the system's red giant star (right).
