Caption

Animation of the planet Venus showing "ashen light", a faint glow from its night side. Although observations of this faint glow have been reported since the mid-17th century, its cause and even its very existence are controversial. The most popular hypothesis is that the night side atmosphere is illuminated by multiple lightning strikes, which are known to occur on the planet.
