Lobster moth pupa. Pupal case of the lobster moth (Stauropus fagi). The pupa of a butterfly or moth is known as a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis the caterpillar undergoes metamorphosis, and eventually emerges as an adult. The lobster moth is native to Northern hemisphere countries of the Old World, including the UK. The caterpillar has an unusual lobster-like appearance.
