Borospherene. Computer graphic of the molecular structure of the boron cluster molecule borospherene (B40). This molecule contains 40 atoms (spheres, white) of the element boron (B), arranged in a structure similar to that of the spherical fullerene molecules. Borospherene is not truly spherical. The structure contains 48 boron triangles, 4 seven-sided rings, and 2 six-membered rings. This view looks through the two hexagonal (6-sided) rings. Borospherene may have applications in nanotechnology. It was discovered in July 2014 by the research group led by chemist Lai-Sheng Wang at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA.
